July. How did that happen so quickly?!
How’s the year going for you?
Studies show that by this time in the year, over 80% of people have ditched their New Year’s resolutions months ago. They have settled back into their comfort zone.
You said to yourself that you would walk 30 minutes a day. Read something other than your phone screen daily. Have dinner as a family three times a week. Call someone whom you haven’t talked to in eons. Dust off the weight machine. Take that basket weaving class you have always wanted to enroll in. Do yoga regularly. Plan your epic trip of a lifetime.
The list goes on.
It’s time to get back on the horse of intent, people!
First off, scrap the New Year’s resolution mentality. Make the changes that you want to make for yourself, not because it’s a date on the calendar.
Ready? Let’s get started on doing good things for yourself!
Today!
Here’s how……
Write it down!
Note what you want to accomplish on paper so you can see what you envision. Make your goalposts short-term; have a week-long schedule at best to start. These mini-goals should be attainable and a way for you to set up a framework so you can begin to celebrate your little wins regularly. For example, "I would like to walk for 30 minutes, three times a week." That seems do-able, yes? Rather than, "I will walk every day." Give yourself a big star stickie on that paper when you finish your walk so it is visible to your eye!
Don’t have too many mini-goals each week. Maybe three maximum, each from a different part of your life. Family, social, you. Or whatever categories you have in mind. Perhaps work is one of your focus areas. Whatever. Just don’t overwhelm your brain by making it a tedious task.
It Doesn’t Have to Be Perfect to Count!
You only have 20 minutes to walk on the day that you had wanted to walk. Do that. It’s better than nada. We often put things off for the very fact that we think we must be perfect in our execution. Or perfect to even start something. Don’t think like that. You will sabotage yourself from the change you seek in your life.
Find a Buddy
Having someone to keep you on track is paramount. It is easier with someone on your side. Your own personal cheerleader who believes in you in an unwaveringly way. That someone who can give you gentle support, keep you accountable in a productive way, and who will not judge you. Someone that will believe in you when you may doubt yourself.
What’s Your Why?
This may be the most important part of keeping any commitment to yourself or making a change: why are you doing this? Why are your mini-goals your mini-goals? Why is it important that you do what you say you will do? Are you walking for the health of it? So you can keep up with the kids or grandkids? Are you reading so your brain keeps stimulated? Are you trying to challenge yourself to learn something new? Are you trying to add fun to your life by doing a different activity or going somewhere new?
Get laser-focused on the why. This will help your consistency.
Okay, there you have it. Simple starting points to help you. Consider it your mid-year pep talk! A short track list of how you can get back on track for the last six months of 2022. Easy peasy, right?
You can do hard things.
You were built for it.
You can do anything you want.
Believe that.
Ready, set, go!
